A long-distance move is picked up on one day and delivered on a later one, and it is priced by a tariff (a price list by distance and size) instead of by the hour. This page shows how the pieces fit together.

Local, intrastate or interstate

Every move type you take (residential, commercial, military) has three distance ranges:

KindWhere you set itMeaning
LocalSettings › Services & packing › Local movesUp to your local limit — priced by the hour.
IntrastateSettings › Long distance › IntrastateLong distance that stays in your state or province.
InterstateSettings › Long distance › InterstateLong distance across state lines.

The ranges are linked: where Local ends, Intrastate starts, and where Intrastate ends, Interstate starts. On the Local page, Switch to interstate if crossing state lines (with your Main State/Province) makes any move that leaves your state interstate, however short.

When you type the addresses on a new lead, MoveBoard measures the distance and picks the kind. If you change a ZIP code later and the move crosses a line, MoveBoard asks before changing anything — see Local or long distance.

How it is priced

Each move type has one long-distance method — Mileage, 400N-style, Single Factor Rate, Cubic Foot, Flat Rate LD or Regions — chosen on Settings › Long distance › Method. The active tariff of that kind is the company default. An order can still be priced by another of your tariffs: pick it in the order's Tariff row. See Choose how long distance is priced.

On top of the line haul come the long-distance extra fees (extra stops, stairs, elevator, long carry, shuttle), fuel, valuation and any services you add.

Each kind also has a Default Estimate Type — Flat Rate, Binding or Non-Binding — that new orders start with. See Binding, non-binding and not-to-exceed estimates.

Who picks up and who delivers

A long-distance order's day has two halves: Pickup and Delivery. At the top of Move Details you choose, for each, Local crew or Trip Planner:

  • Pickup by — Local crew: your crew picks it up on the daily schedule (Dispatch). Trip Planner: your long-distance truck picks it up on its trip — no local truck or crew, a pickup spread from Settings › Long distance › Pickup spread, and the Trip Planner delivers it too.
  • Delivery by — Local crew: the delivery is a job on your Dispatch board with its own truck block, crew and arrival window. Trip Planner: it is delivered on a trip; the order waits on the Trip Planner until you put it on one.

A new long-distance order starts with the choices in Settings › Long distance › New long-distance orders (nothing set: Local crew for both).

The paperwork

The crew fills in the long-distance bill of lading on the phone at pickup and at delivery. You choose which bill a long-distance job uses — see Which bill of lading long distance uses.

Set up long distance, in order

  1. Set the three ranges for each move type (Local, Intrastate, Interstate).
  2. Check your tariff on Mileage tariff (a new company starts with a ready "Standard Mileage" tariff) or build another kind.
  3. Pick the method on Method.
  4. Set Extra fees and Travel time.
  5. Choose your long-distance bill of lading.
  6. If you run your own trips, add your trailers on Trips › Trailers & settings.
