Storage
Use storage units
Turn it on for a branch and the Units tab decides where every tenant is — placing a tenant sets their facility, the tenant window shows the unit, and a move-out frees it.

Use storage units is a switch for each branch. With it on, the Units tab is the one place that says where a tenant's goods are — and everything else follows it. With it off (how every branch starts), nothing changes: you pick the facility in each tenant's window and the Units tab is just a picture of your storage.
Before you start
Open Settings › Storage › Units & warehouse layout. Turning the switch on or off needs Can change storage units. The switch is for the branch you're working in; each branch has its own.
Turn it on
- Turn on Use storage units at the top of the page.
- If some placed tenants carry a facility that isn't the facility of their unit, they are listed under the switch (see below).
- Press Save. Nothing changes until you do.
What changes when it's on
- Placing and moving happen only on the Units tab. Drag a tenant from the left list into a unit, drag them between units, split them over two units, mark a unit full or type the room left — all as before.
- The unit sets the facility. Placing a tenant in a unit (or moving them) makes their storage facility the facility that unit's location is. A tenant in an open space or a warehouse of a Settings facility takes that facility. Their rate, tax and late fee stay as they are; the change shows in the tenant's Storage Log.
- The tenant window only shows where they are. The Unit: line, Where is it (the unit drawn, this tenant lit) and Open in Units ›. The Storage Facility picker is read-only and says Placed in the Units tab (or Not placed yet for a tenant in no unit).
- A move-out frees the unit at once. Saving a tenant Moved Out or Archived (in the window or from the Tenants list), the move-out order being Completed, or the tenant being deleted takes them out of their units. The unit's History says why. If they come back, they are listed under Not placed again.
- Not placed is the left list on the Units tab (it was Coming): everyone in storage who is in no unit, new move-ins included.
- The order window's Storage card shows the unit too. A booked or completed move-in whose tenant isn't in a unit yet says Not placed yet.
- Ed answers "where is Sarah stored?" from the unit she is placed in.
Tenants whose facility doesn't match their unit
When the switch goes on, MoveBoard never quietly changes anyone. A tenant whose facility isn't their unit's is listed with both, for example In unit Newton · #1029 · facility on the tenant: Office. For each one, pick which is right:
| Button | What happens |
|---|---|
| Unit is right | The tenant's facility becomes the unit's facility (Newton). Rate, tax and late fee stay. |
| Facility is right | The tenant keeps their facility and is taken out of the unit, listed under Not placed — then place them in the right unit on the Units tab. |
Both ask before doing anything. When nobody is left, the card says Every placed tenant's facility matches their unit.
Turn it off
Turn the switch off and press Save. Placements stay on the Units tab; the facility is picked in the tenant window again, and a move-out no longer frees the unit on its own (the board lets the tenant go on their move-out day, as it always did).
If something goes wrong
- "Setting up units and the warehouse layout needs the “Can change storage units” permission." — ask an admin for that permission, or to flip the switch for you.
- A location you added on the Units tab (not one of your Facilities) has no facility of its own, so placing a tenant there leaves their facility as it is.
